Loukoumades with sliced bread

700 g
sliced bread
400 ml
milk (½ cup)
500 ml.
sunflower oil (for frying)
For the syrup
500 g
sugar
500 ml
water
zest from half a lemon
1 tbsp
lemon juice
For serving
chopped Aegina pistachios (optional)
Instructions
In a saucepan, add the water, sugar and lemon peel and boil for 5 minutes from the moment it comes to a boil.
Add the lemon juice, remove from the heat and let the syrup cool completely.
Remove the crusts from the sliced bread and cut it into small pieces.
Place the bread in a large bowl, add the milk and knead well until a soft, even dough forms.
Shape into small loukoumades.
Heat the sunflower oil over medium heat and fry the loukoumades until evenly golden.
Transfer them to absorbent paper and, while still warm, dip them into the cold syrup.
Serve optionally with chopped Aegina pistachios.
